The festive season as we know it is just over and we are beginning a New Year. At this time of year I usually go to my General Practitioner for a physical examination.
With the best intentions in the world we all endeavoured to restrain from too many mince pie’s, late night snacks and sleep ins. Our daily exercise and walks were off the menu.
I am very optimistic that once more I will get a clean bill of health and my G.P. will tell me “you are looking good and enjoy another year of good health”.
I picture myself leaving his office and thinking “ By Gods Grace 2012 will be a great year”
On a more serious note as I examine my prayer life a text comes to mind from 2nd Corinthians 13:5 that puts my daily walk with the Lord into focus. Paul says
“ Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that Christ Jesus is in you?-unless indeed you are disqualified” (NKJV). These words challenge us to examine ourselves, not physically as is our Doctors role, but spiritually as to whether we are in the faith. We are also challenged to test and know ourselves. To know ourselves is to know our true identity which is Christ in us. The alternative is to find ourselves disqualified which is to live an unexamined life leading to spiritual death.
So the conclusion I have come to is that daily during 2012 we contemplate the profound and honest prayer of David in Psalms 139:23,24 asking God to examine our hearts, minds and motives. Plead for the Holy Spirit to change whatever is needed as only He can guide and transform us into the character that reflects Christ in us.
