The story of the Celtic Church in Ireland

02 celtic story big thumb

If legend were to be believed, then Patrick would have been credited with converting the entire Irish people from paganism to Christianity in the twenty nine years between 432 and 461. That would have been a miracle indeed – but the fact of the matter is that there were Christians in Ireland before Patrick, and he only worked as an evangelist in part of the island. As in Wales, Christianity entered Ireland by a slow and gradual process of mainly unplanned infiltration from Britain and the continent (Gaul and Iberia). Trade relations, Irish working in Britain, and educated people fleeing the barbarian invasion of France brought their religion with them.
