Giant statue of Patrick above Saul (Northern Ireland)

04 celtic story big thumb

It is hard to undertake any examination of early Celtic Christianity without first mentioning Patrick, one of the early pioneers. Born around the year 378 AD in Britain (probably Somerset or South Wales) – he was of Celtic stock, but culturally Roman – mum would have called him ‘Patricius’ He was the son of a well off Roman style household with slaves and servants.  His family was Christian (Roman Christian) and his grandfather was a priest, but as a youth he had very little interest in the faith. When he was 16 disaster struck – he was captured by Irish pirates (the Scottae) and sold into slavery in Ireland.
