The Hidden Treasure & Pearl of Great Price
Before my family and I have our breakfast every morning, we have been reading together from different parts of the scriptures. Each morning, one of us gets to decide where in the scriptures we read. Today, my wife, Annemarie, wanted us to read from Matthew 13:44-46. This is the first time that we read these together as a family and really discussed the meanings of them. I was really blessed with what lessons we received from this study and hopefully you will be bless too.
"The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls, who, on finding one pearl of great value, went and sold all that he had and bought it."
Familiar parables for us all. As you would probably agree, the hidden treasure and the pearl of great price would be the life, sacrifice, and everlasting life that comes through Jesus Christ. For my children, Jared (9) and Emily (7) this Treasure and this Pearl is worth selling everything for. As the family unanimously agreed with this finding, the kids both shared the following insight that has given me another reason to stand in awe of the Lord. I quote, "Daddy and Mommy, do you think that Jesus sees us as the hidden treasure and the pearl of great price? Isn't that why He went to the cross and died for us?" Wow, what powerful thoughts from children. Jesus saw value in each of us, so much so, that He gave everything He had in order to redeem us. God doesn't ask us to do anything that He didn't do first. The kingdom of heaven is all about finding the treasures and pearls who are hidden in this sinful world and through Jesus giving all, gains possession of the hearts of these treasures and reveals their true value in Him. What a God! He loves us enough to seek us out and then pays the price required. As humans shouldn't we do the same? As we find the Pearl of Great Price, and let Him live in us, and shine out of us, shouldn't we seek the hidden treasures and pearls and be willing to give all to gain them for the kingdom of heaven?
For our family, this is a new concept that God gave to us through the lips of 9 & 7 year olds. We hope it will be a blessing to you as well. During the month of October 2009 I want to encourage you to spend time pondering the gospels but in particular, these two parables found in Matthew. Jesus has plans for the treasures and pearls that He has bought. Jeremiah 29:11 tells us, "For I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future."
